MIME conversion

When you edit a document manually, the MIME option on the rich text field controls whether Notes stores the data as MIME or as Notes rich text. If the current format is different from the specified format, it will be converted, either way.

If you access a document via code, it depends what language you're using. You mentioned a C API function; if you're writing C++ code I wouldn't expect any conversion to occur without you asking for it. However, if you're writing LotusScript or Java code, the Session class has a ConvertMIME property which you can use to control whether the API helpfully converts MIME data to rich text when you access the document.
